Sara Loughlin, MHC-LP
Finding peace and balance in life and relationships can be both a challenge and an important opportunity for personal growth. Through a combination of traditional talk therapy and body-centered, compassion-focused, and trauma-informed approaches, my goal is to provide an inclusive and safe space where individuals and couples can learn to use curiosity, compassion, and their body’s innate wisdom to discover their own unique path to healing and connection.
I work with those experiencing anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, and relationship issues, and use a combination of IFS, CBT, DBT, Compassion-Focused, and Polyvagal theory in my counseling to help individuals and couples to develop self-awareness, self-acceptance, and a ready toolkit of coping and communication skills. I offer an inclusive, nonjudgemental, and tolerant space for all, including LGBTQ+ individuals.
I hold a master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from Antioch College.
I completed 3 years study of Integrated Kabbalistic Healing, which taught me a comprehensive and subtle diagnostic process, very helpful for zeroing in on different layers of conflict people are dealing with. I am also trained in Internal Family Systems for individuals and for couples, which is a powerful approach to gain relief from extreme or persistent behavior and helps us gain more balanced relationships. I also use a combination of Positive Psychology, EFT and Neurolinguistic Programming, to help clients reach a feeling of well being.
I am skillful in asking the right questions to identify the most important parts of your life that need the most attention.
I am also very creative in my approach, and use a range of tools to connect, analyze, interpret, strategize and build confidence.
A few thoughts to better know how I think about counseling.
Many repetitive struggles stem from early programs, installed into us, without our knowledge. When these programs no longer serve us, yet run anyway, we are sabotaged. I will help you locate and reduce the impact of these programs on you, and make you aware of how and why they operate as they do, so you are not working against yourself.
Sometimes fear keeps us well behaved and small. It keeps us from using our skills and intelligence to build opportunities we know we could if we were otherwise free. Working behind many old programs that are running unconsciously, are fears and defense mechanisms. Counseling at its best, can help you recognize some of these fears, to become aware of our "splits" or the places in our lives we go unconscious, and engage in coping mechanisms. We learn to recognize when the past is taking over, when the program is running again, and to begin to enjoy the spontaneity and vibrancy of choosing something new for yourself. We do this, often, by making friends with various parts of yourself, and loosening their grip over you, which enables you to be more present, resourceful and yourself.
